Asset Living Controller Selene Schlamel joined the finance team in April 2022 with more than 15 years of industry experience. From asset management to development, Schlamel already had robust experience working on finance teams within these different areas of real estate before joining Asset Living. She now works on a team that oversees the day-to-day financial operations at Asset Living and has had an opportunity to already apply many of her financial and accounting skills. It is these skills combined with her own experiences that have helped to shape Schlamel into the financial leader she is today. To shed light on a few, Schlamel tells us about her past career experiences, why it was important to do things the right way, and shares what she’s most excited about when it comes to her career at Asset Living.
When did you start your career in accounting and finance?
“In 2003, I started my career in real estate with a firm as a property accountant. I’ve worked on multi-family, commercial, retail, hotel assets, and REO loans.”
What is the greatest piece of wisdom you learned from your career before joining Asset Living?
“The greatest piece of wisdom that I could impart is to embrace every challenge. I’ve advised my team for years to embrace every added task or special assignment as a learning opportunity that adds a bullet point to their resume. Careers are built on that extra mile we take to stretch ourselves and get the job done. Additionally, I’ve always said that we succeed together, or we fail together. We must work together to win together. That means to share information, help when you can, and if you see a need, do something about it.”
How important was it to work for a company that aligned with your personal values?
“Of Asset Living’s values, honesty and impact are the most important to me. I am so proud to be part of an organization that uses its resources to do good in the community. I found it important to work for a firm that did things the right way – supported its employees with clear policies, communicated with honesty, and provided oversight of its human resources in a way that was fair and respectful.”
What are you most excited about when it comes to your role at Asset Living?
“I am most excited about the growth path of the firm and the daily opportunities to learn and make a difference. We are constantly pushed to do our best to keep up with the fast pace of operations. We must collaborate and draw upon everyone’s knowledge to be the best as a department by showing up with our A-game every day. I look forward to being an impactful part of the Asset Living growth story.”
