Asset Living’s Sarah Michels Shares Advice on #BecomingAnAsset

Understanding how to build a successful team starts with learning from those who have worked hard to develop and shape their career to become an integral part of the team. In the #BecomingAnAsset series, we ask Asset Living employees to share advice for those looking to grow personally and professionally – from turning challenges into opportunities for career development to persevering towards a promotion – our team members are full of quality advice that can help to guide anyone towards success. Today, we are hearing from Sarah Michels, Regional Manager.

What is your background and experience in and what do you do within Asset Living?

“I started as a Community Assistant in college to cover my rent. I had no idea that I would continue my career in student housing 15 years later. Before becoming a Regional Manager, I spent my last few years on-site as a Senior Community Manager who was assigned to newly purchased properties undergoing major renovations and are brand new. At purchase, these properties were 45-70% occupied, and within two years, these assets were stabilized at 95% or higher occupancy. Since becoming a Regional Manager, I have had a mix of new development, stabilized, and renovation project properties in my portfolio.

Currently, I am a Regional Manager for the student housing operations division of Asset Living. In this position, I work directly with our clients and the property teams to oversee all aspects of the operations and leasing of our communities. I learn and work with some of the most talented people in the industry.  Along with my responsibilities as a Regional Manager, I am a 2023 Asset Ambassador. This opportunity allows me to connect with peers, contribute to my company, and share my passion for the student housing industry.”

What piece of advice would you give to a new employee who is #BecomingAnAsset?

“Contribute, engage, and be open to new ideas. Student housing is ever-changing, which is what makes this industry exciting and challenging. Learn from your team and your mentors, utilize the multitude of resources available to you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You are now a part of the Asset family, and we are here to help support you with anything you need!”

What drives you to be the best team member possible?

“My biggest motivators are having a positive impact on every person on my team and being able to not only succeed in the goals we set but exceed them. I have been fortunate throughout my career with mentors and supervisors who believed in my abilities and helped with my growth. My goal is to be able to provide the same resources and opportunities for my team.”

What is your favorite memory from this year or within your career at Asset Living?

“This past year was the first time since COVID that Asset Living was able to host an in-person SVP conference. Being able to collaborate with all of the Community Managers plus the corporate support team was amazing. We also had the opportunity to all hang out, relax and enjoy a baseball game together!

Lastly, what do you like to do outside of work in your free time?

“I love spending time with family, friends, and my two puppies. Traveling and exploring new places are among my favorite pastimes, and I'm a devoted fan of Oklahoma Sooners football!"
