Understanding how to build a successful team starts with learning from those who have worked hard to develop and shape their career to become an integral part of the team. In the #BecomingAnAsset series, we ask Asset Living employees to share advice for those looking to grow personally and professionally – from turning challenges into opportunities for career development to persevering towards a promotion – our team members are full of quality advice that can help to guide anyone towards success. Today we are hearing from Jerry Martinez, Community Manager.
What is your background and experience in and what do you do within Asset Living?
"I joined Asset Living in April 2013 and celebrated my 10th anniversary with my Asset Family. I started my career as a Leasing Consultant and was promoted to Assistant Property Manager in a short time, as I was eager to further my career with Asset Living. In February 2018, I took on my very first property as a Community Manager, where I was able to utilize all the tools and knowledge that had been taught and given to me over the years. As a team, we were able to have a successful outcome surpassing all goals and improving the overall performance of this community. In October 2019, I was given my first opportunity to begin a new development/lease-up project In Huntsville, Texas, where we were awarded Conventional Property of the Year and Conventional Manager of the Year for 2021 & 2022 by the Bryan/College Station Apartment Association. I have since been relocated back to Houston, Texas, in 2022, where I am currently working on continuing my growth as an asset to our company and plan on continuing to climb the ranks with Asset Living with the hopes to one day be a great Regional Supervisor.”
Throughout my career with Asset and as my roles have changed, I have had the pleasure of working alongside some amazing people and some of the best mentors I know. They took the time to teach me all about the aspects of property management, helping me excel in each area of my career.
Our Asset Team truly holds its true core values of Family, Drive, Honesty, and Impact. “
What piece of advice would you give to a new employee who is #BecomingAnAsset?
"One piece of advice I would offer to a new employee is to take the challenge and not be afraid to make mistakes, as that is how we learn by taking the opportunities to allow yourselves to grow. Here at Asset, we are a family in that we can rely on one another to get through all situations as a team. Always put your heart and soul into all you do and watch yourself blossom into something beautiful you will be proud of."
What drives you to be the best team member possible?
“The one thing that drives me the most to be the best team member is to be able to offer the same opportunities and knowledge that were given to me to others and watch them grow into new positions that are well deserved. I have really enjoyed watching the growth within Asset Living and promotions for many individuals over the years.”
What is your favorite memory from this year or within your career at Asset Living?
“My favorite memory within my career was having our very first Manager's Convention with the Multi-Family and Student Housing division. It was great to see how many of us there were and experience the interaction with our events, speakers, and share conversations of our personal experiences with one another while having a blast.”
Lastly, what do you like to do outside of work in your free time?
“When I am not at work, I love spending time with my family and being near the water, whether it's a lake or an ocean, I love spending time with mother nature. Also, I can't forget about spending time and cuddling with my 2 fur babies, Ms. Blossom & Ms. Luna.”
