Understanding how to build a successful team starts with learning from those who have worked hard to develop and shape their career to become an integral part of the team. In the #BecomingAnAsset series, we ask Asset Living employees to share advice for those looking to grow personally and professionally. From turning challenges into opportunities for career development to persevering towards a promotion, our team members are full of quality advice that can help to guide anyone towards success. Today we are hearing from Amanda Wallace, VP of Communications.
What is your background and experience in and what do you do within Asset Living?
“I initially fell in love with writing and storytelling when I was in college at SMU studying corporate communications and journalism. After graduation, I learned I could do this for consumer brands and worked for nearly a decade at a public relations agency gaining valuable experience in brand marketing. In February of 2021, I joined Asset Living as the VP of Communications, and I currently work with the corporate marketing team on all internal and external strategies with a specialization in traditional public relations. I couldn’t be prouder of everything the team has accomplished in these last few years, and I know we won’t be slowing down in this final stretch of 2023.”
What piece of advice would you give to a new employee who is #BecomingAnAsset?
“As someone who is a fulltime remote employee, I’d recommend not being afraid to set up virtual coffee 1:1’s with different team members throughout the Asset Living network. This is a great way to make connections and foster new relationships that may go beyond your current role or department to understand the different groups that make up Asset Living. When it comes to building comradery with your team, I also strongly suggest setting up morning and afternoon meetings as forced touchpoints throughout the day to help with staying connected and being as accessible as possible to one another. For corporate employees, I highly recommend utilizing the Microsoft Teams chat feature to engage in office activities, raise your hand for a volunteer opportunity, or to simply stay up to date with what’s happening (shameless plug to also read the Asset Living blog for companywide updates)!”
What drives you to be the best team member possible?
“The individuals that make up the corporate marketing team are extremely collaborative. Together, we constantly brainstorm new ideas, and each person brings forth their unique strengths that play nicely together. During these moments, we push each other to not only come up with great ideas and concepts – but we want to be seen as the trailblazers in our industry. This is what I find the most satisfying and what keeps me driven in this role. We all love what we do, and when we’re all able to showcase our strengths, get creative and share our ideas, that’s when work begins to feel less like work and more like our passion!”
What is your favorite memory from this year or within your career at Asset Living?
“In March, I was blessed to become a mom to my now four month old daughter, Louise. After she was born, I took a few months off work as part of my maternity leave benefits. While I was nervous about stepping away from work, everyone on the HR team was so wonderful throughout the entire planning process and my teammates immediately jumped in on projects to help ensure every detail was being handled. This level of teamwork, friendship and integrity within our people is a true reflection of our corporate values and makes me proud to say I work for Asset Living. I’m so grateful to have had that special time with my baby and to have had a team that was so reliable and supportive when I needed it the most.”
Lastly, what do you like to do outside of work in your free time?
“Outside of work, I love spending time with my family (husband Jake and new baby Louise), friends, and two dogs (George and Boone). We recently returned from a family beach trip where we took our daughter to splash in the ocean surf and step foot on the sandy beach – but she ended up spending most of the trip napping in my lap under an umbrella! We’re already looking forward to next summer when she will be a little older and mobile enough to enjoy more quality beach time.”
