Reflections on the 2023 Covenant House Sleep Out Experience from Associate Corporate Counsel, Judge Sallans

At Asset Living, we firmly believe in the power of making a positive impact in our communities. Our core value of impact isn't just a buzzword; it's a driving force behind our actions. In 2023, we had the privilege of participating in Covenant House’s annual Sleep Out at the Houston headquarters, an experience that left a lasting impression on our team.

Sleep Out is a night dedicated to sleeping outdoors with just a sleeping bag, showing solidarity and support to the thousands of young individuals who come to Covenant House Texas each year seeking refuge. Beyond raising funds through Sleep Out, Covenant House provides support through nourishing foods, clean clothing, and essential services like job training, education, healthcare, mental health counseling, and legal assistance.

We consulted with Judge Sallans, Associate Corporate Counsel, who shared his reflections and personal experience after participating in Asset Livings’ most recent Sleep Out event.

"Being a recent new hire, I did not know much about Covenant House prior to last year's Sleep Out event at the Houston office, but I'm extremely glad that I participated because it was eye-opening," says Sallans.

Experiencing Sleep Out

Judge Sallans, one of Asset Living's dedicated team members, gave up the comforts of his home for one night to raise awareness about youth homelessness. Last year, Team Asset raised over $230,000, with all funds directly supporting efforts to provide shelter and essential services to help homeless youth build independent futures.

"Not only was I able to see what an amazing organization Covenant House is, but it also afforded me the opportunity to learn about Covenant House's impact and experience a small taste of why they do what they do. As part of the Houston Sleep Out event, we heard the inspirational story of Liz Murray, who battled homelessness during her youth and later went on to graduate from Harvard. After hearing about Liz's journey, we ventured outside to get a sense of what a night on the streets may be like. While sleeping outside in a secure environment for one night doesn't even come close to experiencing homelessness, it was still a powerful experience. It gives you a small sense of the fear, restlessness, and vulnerability that comes with sleeping in public. It makes you appreciate what you have and want to help those who may not be as fortunate,” says Sallans.

Together, we can make a meaningful difference and put our core value of impact into action. Asset Living plans to participate in the 13th annual Covenant House Sleep Out this November.
